So why flamingos?
A Name Born on Social Media
During the first days of the demonstrations in late May 2026, Albanian journalist and BIRN reporter Gjergj Erebarasuggested on social media that the civic movement be called “The Flamingo Revolution” (“Revolucioni i Flamingove”).
The idea quickly resonated with many participants, artists, and supporters, who began creating flamingo-themed artwork, posters, and symbols for the demonstrations. The name soon spread through Albanian and international media.
Why Flamingos?
The pink flamingo has become a symbol because of the Vjosa–Narta Protected Landscape in southwestern Albania.
The Narta Lagoon, near the city of Vlora, is one of the country’s most important wetlands and a major stop along the Adriatic migratory bird route. Every year, thousands of flamingos rest and feed there alongside pelicans and many other bird species, while the lagoon also supports fish, coastal ecosystems, and diverse wildlife.

The Environmental Context
The demonstrations were sparked by controversy surrounding plans for major tourism development near protected coastal areas, including the Vjosa–Narta wetlands.
Supporters of the protests argue that construction could threaten sensitive habitats and biodiversity. The Albanian government has stated that development and environmental protection can coexist and that projects will follow applicable procedures, while environmental organizations have expressed concern about the impact on protected ecosystems.
More Than an Environmental Symbol
As the demonstrations continued, the flamingo evolved beyond a wildlife symbol.
For many participants, it came to represent community, resilience, and the idea of ordinary citizens coming together without a single leader.
