Things to do in Tepelena in August
Visit Tepelena Castle
Start with the ruins of Ali Pasha’s castle. They sit above the town and are free to explore. The thick stone walls and open views over the Vjosa River are worth the walk. You can go early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is lower.
Walk by the Vjosa River
The river runs along the edge of town. Walk the path near the old bridge. It’s calm, shaded, and a good place to rest. The Ali Pasha Bridge nearby is a nice spot for a short stop and a few photos.
Go to Uji i Ftohte (Cold Water Spring)
About 10 minutes by car, this spring is where locals go to cool off. It has clear water, trees, and picnic areas. You can bring snacks or just sit by the water. It stays fresh even in the hottest days of August.
Explore Nivice and the canyons
If you have a car or like to hike, head south toward Nivice. You’ll find deep canyons, stone cliffs, and small waterfalls. There are also natural pools where you can swim. Some paths are rough, so wear good shoes and go early to avoid the heat.
Visit Dragot and the Old Bridge
Drive a bit further to see the Dragot Bridge over the Vjosa. It was built in 1936 and still stands strong. Near it, you can spot the Lera rock towers, shaped by nature over time.

Eat local food
Try dishes like tave kosi, qifqi, or fresh grilled meat. Ask locals for a tavern or a guesthouse that serves homemade meals. Many places use simple ingredients but cook them well.
Stay in a village guesthouse
Look for a small guesthouse in Progonat, Lekdush, Memaliaj or Kurvelesh. You’ll get fresh air, quiet nights, and maybe some local stories. Some hosts also offer hiking or walks through the fields.
