Have you ever visited an Albanian household? Let us tell you that if not, then many “unwritten” rules Albanians have, may come as a cultural shock to you. Albanians are without doubt some of the most hospitable people, so they will always offer you to go inside their houses for a drink, lunch or dinner. However, be mindful that they will have some specific expectations from you during your visit.

1. Take off your shoes

Remove your shoes at the door, it’s a sign of respect for the home. The host out of kindness may tell you to go in with your shoes, however they do expect that you take your shoes off. If the host offers slippers, accept them.

2. Women cross-greet women 4 times

If you’re a woman greeting another woman, expect four alternating cheek kisses, even if you are fine with two, its a cultural greeting to go for four. Men use a simple hand shake.

3. Do not refuse food or drink

Eat and drink what’s offered, even if just a small portion so that you can be part of the table and say cheers when must. Refusing can be seen as impolite.

4. Say “Gëzuar” every 10 minutes

When drinks are served, raise your glass and say “Gëzuar” (cheers) regularly. It’s part of keeping the mood lively and deeply embedded in the Albanian Culture.

5. Ask the hosts about the health of their children, siblings and parents

Show genuine interest in the well-being of the host’s children, siblings, and parents. It’s a valued gesture in Albanian culture. Try not to make it sound to “gossipy” but definitely ask if they are doing well.

6. Bring a gift or “throw” money

Guests are expected to arrive with something in hand. Either a dessert, a bottle of juice, if the host has children get a sweet treat for them, but if you are not too sure what to get, money is always the savour. “Throwing” money on the candies when they get shared to each one of the guests, is seen as very respectful and the hosts are very grateful. You will be seeing them trying to refuse the money, but highly appreciate it and are lowkey expecting it.

7. Greet elders first

When you step inside, focus on the eldest person in the room. Shake hands or follow their lead with cheek kisses. Do not be surprised if you are greeted many times during your stay. Albanians enjoy reinforcing warmth and hospitality through repeated greetings.

8. Dress “modestly”

Pay attention to your outfit. Keep it modest and neat. A tidy shirt, pressed trousers, or a simple dress will always be appropriate. As Albanians can be very old fashion, especially if there are elders in the room, pay attention too any very revealing clothes as its a disrespect according to the elders.

9. Expect to be asked a lot about family and to be greeted many times

Expect many questions about your family. Albanians want to know about your parents, siblings, and children. Ask the same in return, your hosts will appreciate it.

10. Mind your sitting posture

Mind your sitting posture, sit upright, and try to keep your phone off the table by paying attention to the conversations that will be going on the table.
