Zogaj in Shkodra, the village known for centuries for fishing, medicinal plants, virgin nature and especially for its alpine climate

The hiking trails and their maps

The village of Zogaj lies along Lake Shkodra, 3-4 km beyond the village of Shiroka, on the border with Montenegro. After leaving Shiroka, you have to walk another 7 km on a narrow road, while on one side you are accompanied by Tarabosh Mountain and on the other side you will see the Lake.

Zogaj is an old fishing village and together with Shiroka are among the most beautiful areas of Northern Albania. It is known for the traditional rugs and life that flows somewhat differently from the other villages arounf. The ladies of the village still work to create typical carpets with Albanian motifs that were once common in every house in Shkodra, and now are bought only by collectors or visitors.

How did this story start?

About 100 years ago, out of necessity to live and since they had numerous cattle, the inhabitants of this area began to produce carpets. This activity continued uninterrupted until the ’45s, taking its name in all the northern parts of the country. But for more than 40 years, such a craft was left in oblivion.

A village known for centuries for fishing, medicinal plants, virgin nature and especially for its alpine climate. There is no car dust, no noise and no buildings that have destroyed the fauna and flora of the area.In this village you can find the famous carp pan, the traditional cooking of this fish which the inhabitants preserve with fanaticism.

This area gives you many opportunities for fun because it has clear waters and an untouched nature. The beaches of the area which are public, the pier which serves as a trampoline, boats which can be taken with a symbolic amount to sail and old houses that can serve as inns; are the ideal attractions and opportunities to make cheap and wonderful vacations. In this area can be made bicycle tripsand explorations on the trails of Mount Tarabosh that go near the village of Skje in Montenegro.

You will find in Zogaj inns starting from 20 euros per night, restaurants with traditional food, hiking trails for your daily adventures and people who welcome you and wish you to come back again.
