"The Pheasant Forest", Korçë' s magical forest | Albania360 | App | Social | Web

This small but rich forest is the perfect little escape if you’re visiting Korçë or Pogradec—two nearby cities that make great starting points if you’re craving a peaceful, green break from the buzz. If you’re coming by minibus from either city, just let the driver know to drop you off near Maliq, but make sure it’s along the main road, not inside the town, to keep the walk shorter. From there, you can either grab a taxi or, if you’re up for a bit of adventure, head there on foot—it’s no more than a 40-minute walk and a great way to ease into nature.

As its name suggests, the forest is home to pheasants—but these beautiful birds are just the beginning. The Pheasant Forest shelters an impressive range of wildlife, including deer, wild rabbits, foxes, and many bird species. The diversity of the flora is just as rich, with tall poplars, willows, lindens, pine trees, and firs shaping the forest’s unique character and offering visitors a refreshing environment to explore.

The fresh green of the forest, the sunlight slipping through the leaves, and the quiet all around—it’s the kind of moment that stays with you. Picture yourself on a picnic right there, your face warm under the sun, surrounded by trees. You’ll find a few wooden tables and benches where you can sit and enjoy your meal more comfortably, but if you’re after something more natural, just lay out a cloth and stretch out on the grass. Some of the trees have these odd, beautiful shapes—great for climbing or grabbing a cool photo with the forest behind you. And if you’re lucky to come at the right time of year, you might spot some wild blackberries along the way. Pick a few, enjoy the taste, and just let the day unfold slowly.

This forest hasn’t always looked like this. Back in the 1960s, what is now the Pheasant Forest was a swampy stretch of land. Over the years, it was carefully transformed into a green, forested area beloved by locals and visitors alike. Though the forest went through a period of neglect, recent efforts have brought it back to life—and today, it stands as a beautiful example of nature reclaiming its place.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to unwind, this forest is a fantastic choice. It’s perfect for weekend strolls, family picnics, or just soaking in the natural beauty. The calm atmosphere, clean air, and occasional glimpses of wildlife make every visit memorable. Whether you’re from the area or just passing through Korçë or Pogradec, the Pheasant Forest is well worth your time.
