The Origin of the Blue Eye
The Blue Eye is a freshwater spring located near the village of Muzinë, in the south of Albania. The spring’s striking feature is its circular, eye-shaped pool with vivid blue water. This karst spring, which emerges from the ground at a temperature of 10°C, creates a whirlpool effect that is both beautiful and mysterious. The depth of the spring is still unknown, as attempts by divers to explore the depths have proven unsuccessful, with the deepest recorded point being around 50 meters. Its otherworldly appearance and the fact that its source remains a mystery only add to the allure of the Blue Eye. The lush vegetation surrounding it further enhances its breathtaking charm, creating a serene environment that invites visitors to pause and reflect.
The Legend of the Snake and the Old Man
One of the most captivating legends surrounding the Blue Eye is the story of the giant snake that once roamed the land. It’s said that this massive serpent terrorized the nearby villages, causing fear and destruction wherever it went. Livestock disappeared mysteriously, and the villagers lived in constant dread of the creature. Desperate to put an end to this menace, an old, wise man from a nearby village came up with a clever plan. The man, who was known for his wit, decided to trick the snake. He set his donkey on fire, hoping the snake would mistake the animal for something more tempting. The donkey, ablaze with flames, was sent to the snake’s lair. When the snake saw the burning creature, it hungrily swallowed it whole, not realizing the danger inside. As the fire spread inside the snake, it began to writhe in agony, desperately trying to flee the pain.
Why was it called “Blue Eye”?
In its desperate flight, the snake left a trail of destruction. Its massive body slithered across the land, leaving behind a path scorched and scarred by the flames. As the creature’s suffering grew, it came to a stop at the place where the Blue Eye spring now lies. There, the snake died, leaving behind a deep, blue hole in the earth, a mark of its fiery end. And so, the Blue Eye was born—a symbol of the snake’s defeat and the triumph of the clever old man’s plan. The vibrant blue color of the water is said to represent the fiery death of the serpent, forever engraved in the heart of Albania’s natural landscape.
A alternate unspoken myth – The “Blind Eye” of the River
Another local legend offers a different take on the Blue Eye’s origin, this time linked to a mighty river that once flowed through the region. The river, full of life and energy, is said to have clashed violently with the spring, creating a dramatic battle between the two water bodies. During their epic struggle, stones and rocks were displaced, forming the unique whirlpool and the “blind” eye shape of the spring. Some locals believe that the river’s defeat is why the Blue Eye seems to possess a “blind” gaze, as if it is forever waiting, reflecting the waters of the land in its depths. This tale adds a layer of myth to the natural beauty of the Blue Eye, making it not just a spring, but a place of ancient conflict and mystery.
