Let me introduce you to a remarkable young woman who embodies the spirit of adventure in every sense.

She reminds me of the fearless spirit of Princess Merida from “Brave,” with her unwavering determination and love for adventure, and the warrior strength of Xena, always ready for a new challenge. She’s often compared to a real-life Dora the Explorer due to her name, but her stories are far from the animated world.

In our interview, she shares some of her wildest and most unforgettable experiences, offering a glimpse into the life of an Albanian adventurer who truly lives for the thrill of the unknown.

1. What’s the wildest adventure you’ve had in Albania that your friends still think you’re making up?

One of the wildest adventures I’ve had in Albania was traveling alone in the remote mountains. Picture this: rugged paths winding through untouched landscapes, the air crisp and fresh, with only the sound of my footsteps and the occasional rustle of wildlife. I set out on this journey with just a backpack and a map, eager to explore the uncharted beauty of the region.

There were moments of sheer exhilaration as I reached breathtaking viewpoints that seemed to stretch out endlessly. But there were also unexpected challenges—navigating through dense forests, crossing rivers, and finding shelter when night fell. It was a test of my endurance and resilience, but also a journey of self-discovery.

2. If you had to choose between parachuting into the Grand Canyon or horse riding across the Sahara Desert, which would you pick and why?

Given the choice between parachuting into the Grand Canyon or horse riding across the Sahara Desert, I would choose horse riding across the Sahara Desert without hesitation.

There’s something profoundly magical about the idea of traversing vast, golden dunes on horseback. The slow, rhythmic pace of riding allows you to truly absorb the breathtaking landscape, feel the warmth of the desert sun, and connect deeply with both the horse and the environment. It’s an experience that immerses you in the rich, ancient culture of the desert nomads and gives you a sense of timeless adventure.

    3. Have you ever had a moment during your travels where you thought, “This is it, I’m in a real-life action movie”?

Absolutely, I’ve had moments during my travels that felt like scenes straight out of a real-life action movie. One that stands out the most is when I was horseback riding in a remote, rugged terrain.

Imagine galloping across open fields, the wind whipping through your hair, and the landscape unfolding around you in all its wild, untamed beauty. The adrenaline rush of riding at full speed, navigating through challenging paths, and the sheer excitement of the adventure made me feel like I was the hero in my own action-packed story.

There were moments of thrilling uncertainty—unexpected obstacles, sudden changes in weather, and the raw power of the horse beneath me. It was a test of both my riding skills and my ability to stay calm under pressure. That experience, with its blend of exhilaration and unpredictability, truly made me feel like I was living in an action movie.

      4. What’s the funniest mishap you’ve had while camping or hiking in the Albanian wilderness?

It happened while camping in the Albanian wilderness during a hiking trip with friends. We had set up camp near a picturesque lake, ready to enjoy a serene evening under the stars.

As night fell, we gathered around the campfire, telling stories and roasting marshmallows. In the middle of a particularly spooky story, we heard rustling in the bushes. Our imaginations ran wild, thinking it was a wild animal. Armed with flashlights and makeshift weapons, we cautiously approached the sound, hearts pounding.

When we finally shone our lights on the source, we burst into laughter. It was a curious goat, likely from a nearby farm, casually munching on some of our food supplies. The goat seemed completely unfazed by our presence, and we couldn’t stop laughing at how we had worked ourselves up over nothing.

That night, we ended up sharing some of our snacks with our unexpected guest and spent the rest of the evening in high spirits, telling jokes and enjoying the absurdity of the situation. It’s a mishap we still laugh about whenever we reminisce about our camping adventures.

        5. If you could have any animal as your adventure sidekick, which one would it be and what would you name it?

If I could have any animal as my adventure sidekick, I would choose a horse. Horses are known for their strength, endurance, and the deep bond they form with their riders, making them perfect companions for long and adventurous journeys.

I would name my horse “Spirit.” This name reflects the horse’s free and adventurous nature, as well as the unwavering determination and resilience that make each adventure memorable. With Spirit by my side, every trail we traverse would be an incredible journey filled with exploration, trust, and the thrill of the open road.

          6. What’s a local Albanian delicacy you’ve tried on your travels and you would always want to eat?

Something I absolutely fell in love with is “maze e zime.” It’s a simple yet incredibly comforting dish that I could eat over and over again. The rich, creamy texture and the way it warms you up from the inside is something truly special. Every bite feels like a warm hug, and it reminds me of the warmth and hospitality of the Albanian people. Maze e zime is more than just food; it’s a taste of the country’s heart and soul.

            7. What’s your favorite hidden gem in Albania that you think more people should know about?

One of my favorites in Albania is Komani Lake. This stunning lake, with its turquoise waters and dramatic mountain scenery, feels like a hidden paradise. Taking a boat ride across the lake is an unforgettable experience, as you glide through untouched landscapes that seem almost magical. It’s a peaceful and pristine place where you can truly connect with nature. Komani Lake is a treasure that more people should have the chance to discover and enjoy since there is plenty of hidden places where you can also stay for the night either camping or at guesthouses that keep the local touch.

              8. Have you ever had a moment where Albania’s nature surprised you in a way you never expected?

Albania’s nature never ceases to surprise me, especially when I’m hiking. Two of my favorite hikes that left me in awe are the trails to Cika Mountain and the Peaks of the Balkans.

Hiking to Cika Mountain offers breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and the landscapes with weirdly shaped trees that stretch as far as the eye can see. The journey is both challenging and rewarding, with each step unveiling new, stunning vistas.

The Peaks of the Balkans trail, on the other hand, takes you through a mix of rugged mountains, lush valleys, and remote villages. This hike shows the raw, untouched beauty of Albania, leaving a lasting impression with its dramatic scenery. Both hikes are extraordinary in their own way.

                9. What’s your secret trick for packing light but being prepared for anything?

My secret is to focus on versatility and essentials. Here’s how I do it:

                  1. I choose versatile clothing: Pack items that can be mixed and matched easily.
                  2. Layering: Bring clothes that can be layered for different weather conditions. This way, you’re prepared for both warm and cold temperatures without overpacking.
                  3. Travel-sized toiletries: Opt for travel-sized versions of your essentials and consider solid toiletries like shampoo bars to save space and avoid spills.
                  4. Lightweight gear: Invest in lightweight and compact gear, such as a foldable rain jacket, a compact umbrella, and a quick-dry towel.
                  5. Multi-use accessories: Bring accessories that serve multiple purposes, like a Swiss Army knife, a phone with a good camera, and a power bank with a built-in flashlight.

                  10. What’s the most unusual place you’ve ever pitched a tent in Albania?

During our trip from North to South Albania, one of the most unusual places I have pitched a tent in Albania is near the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër), a stunning natural spring. The crystal-clear waters and lush surroundings create a magical atmosphere. Another great spot is anywhere in the Albanian Alps, where you can camp under the stars surrounded by dramatic mountains and remote villages. The blend of nature and culture makes these places truly unique for camping!

                    11. Have you ever had an experience in Albania where you thought, “I wish Dora the Explorer had warned me about this”?

Yes, I’ve had a moment like that in Albania. The hike alongside the Shala River, from Theth to Komani Lake, was one such experience. The trail was incredibly steep and challenging, with only one spot to fill up on water along the way. It was a dry and demanding journey that caught me off guard. I remember thinking, “I wish Dora the Explorer had warned me about this!” Despite the difficulty, the breathtaking scenery and sense of adventure made it an unforgettable experience. But next time, I’ll be sure to carry extra water and prepare for the steep climb.

                      12. If you could parachute into any era of Albanian history, where and when would you go, and what would you do first?

I would choose the Illyrian period, around 300 BCE, when the ancient Illyrian tribes flourished. This era is rich with cultural heritage and significant developments.

Upon arrival, the first thing I would do is visit the city of Shkodra, one of the most important Illyrian strongholds. I’d explore the legendary Rozafa Castle, which has stood the test of time, and witness the daily life and customs of the Illyrian people. Immersing myself in their vibrant culture, I’d learn about their art, traditions, and governance, gaining a deeper understanding of Albania’s ancient roots and historical significance.

                        13. What’s one piece of adventure gear you can’t live without and why does it have a special place in your heart?

It is my trusty multi-tool. This versatile gadget has a special place in my heart because it has come to my rescue countless times on my travels.

Whether I need to open a can, cut some rope, fix a piece of equipment, or even use the tiny scissors or screwdriver, my multi-tool is always up to the task. Its compact size makes it easy to carry everywhere, and the feeling of being prepared for almost anything brings me peace of mind.
