Walk into an Albanian wedding and you’ll hear music, laughter, and the money in the air, falling like confetti. It’s not about showing off. It’s a way to show love, pride, and respect for the couple. Throwing money while someone dances is one of the oldest traditions still alive across all parts of Albania. It is not an optional thing, you are somehow obligated to throw money in the dancing circle, most go on the brides hair or dress, and some on the groom as well.

Unlike weddings abroad, guests are not obligated to buy presents for the couple, but money is a must. Sounds weird, fun, nice? Well every feeling is understood, it is a big cultural shock for many but for Albanians this is the norm, the culture and is respected by everyone.

The act of throwing money during during a dance is one of the most visible ways Albanians express respect and connection and is always expected by everyone, and also looked down upon in case someone of the guests do not. It is the same for Albanians worldwide, not only in Albania, they all follow this unwritten rule. It’s not for the cameras, though you’ll see plenty of phones recording the moment. It’s for the people. For the couple. For the family. And everyone watching knows what that flying money means.

You don’t need to be told what to do. When someone important gets up to dance, you move forward. You reach into your pocket. And you throw. It’s usually someone close to the couple who starts it—a sibling, a cousin, a best friend. In reality the worth of the bill is not too important, unless you are a close relative or have close friendship ties with one of the couple’ s side or with them directly. But everyone is expected to throw something. The money follows the rhythm of the music. Slow, then fast. People step into the circle one after another. It’s not random. It’s emotional. The more someone throws, the more they want to show their bond. You can’t fake it. Albanians read meaning in those small bills. They remember who showed up and how.

Older guests take this tradition even more seriously. Some families quietly track who gave what—not to measure worth, but to continue a system of mutual respect. Today it’s your wedding, tomorrow it’s theirs. You’ll give back what was given. Even if someone throws just a few bills, it still matters. What counts is the gesture. A way of saying, “I see you, I support you.” It turns a private relationship into a public statement. And in Albanian culture, that counts for more than a gift box or fancy envelope.

In some parts of Albania, the scene has its own style. The bride may wear a scarf or apron that holds the money. In others, there is a small basket in the middle and kids run around scooping up the bills to put them inside. Someone may walk through with a hat or plate. The crowd claps, laughs, cheers. The energy rises. But the meaning stays serious. You don’t stay seated when your moment comes. You take part. You give what you can. Everyone knows what you did, and why you did it.

So if you ever get invited to an Albanian wedding, don’t just show up. Be ready to join in. Bring small bills—5s, 10s, maybe 20s. Watch how the others do it. When the music starts and someone close to the couple dances, follow them. Step forward. Throw the money. Smile. That simple act will say everything you need to say. It’s not about the amount. It’s about respect. And in Albania, respect always shows up.
