Welcome to Gjirokaster – the city of stone, steep hills, and surprisingly strong calves. If you’ve only got 24 hours here, don’t panic. We’ve packed everything you must see, eat, and do into one glorious (and slightly exhausting) day. Just wear comfy shoes and stretch your legs – because Gjirokaster stairs don’t play.

Table of Contents
8:00 AM – Wake Up in a Stone Dream
Check into a traditional Ottoman-style guesthouse. The floors creak, the ceilings are carved, and the WiFi might be as old as the walls – but who needs Instagram when you’re living inside it?

9:00 AM – Breakfast Like a Grandma Fed You
Start your day with a homemade breakfast: fresh white cheese, honey from the mountains, olives, tomatoes, and petulla (fried dough that hugs your soul). Wash it down with dhalle – a salty yogurt drink that separates the tourists from the warriors.

10:00 AM – Conquer the Castle (Like a History Nerd Gladiator)
Walk (climb) up to the Gjirokaster Castle. It’s got stunning views, spooky prison cells, and an American fighter jet just… sitting there. No one knows exactly why, but hey, selfie opportunity!
Where to Eat: Top 12 Restaurants in Gjirokaster
12:00 PM – Museum Hop and Pretend You’re Educated
Visit the Ethnographic Museum (aka the childhood home of dictator Enver Hoxha – awkward), then check out Zekate House for gorgeous Ottoman interiors and a peek into the life of 19th-century Albanian nobles. Warning: you’ll be tempted to redecorate your apartment.
1:30 PM – Lunch at a Local Taverna
Refuel with qifqi (rice balls with herbs – basically Albanian sushi), tave kosi (lamb baked in yogurt), and whatever grandma is cooking in the back. If the waiter offers you raki, say yes – just cancel any plans that involve standing afterward.

3:00 PM – Get Lost in the Bazaar
Stroll through the Old Bazaar, where cobblestone alleys twist like a soap opera plot. Buy silver jewelry, handwoven rugs, and weird wooden spoons you’ll never use but had to have. Practice your best “Faleminderit” as vendors charm you into buying things you didn’t know existed.
5:00 PM – Coffee Time (Because That’s the Law Here)
Albania runs on coffee, not gasoline. Sit at a terrace café, order an espresso, and people-watch like a local. Bonus points if you eavesdrop on a passionate debate about football or politics – usually both.

6:30 PM – Sunset Views with a Side of “Wow”
Climb (again) to a viewpoint and watch the sun set behind the mountains. Gjirokaster at golden hour looks like a Game of Thrones set, minus the dragons. Unless you drank too much raki – then no promises.
8:00 PM – Dinner and Live Music Vibes
End the day with a feast at a family-run restaurant. Order stuffed peppers, byrek, and more raki (because why not?). If you’re lucky, you’ll catch some iso-polyphony – Albania’s hauntingly beautiful traditional singing. Warning: goosebumps are guaranteed.

10:00 PM – Sleep Like a Stone (Pun Intended)
Crawl into your antique bed and let the sound of distant crickets and your food coma rock you to sleep. Tomorrow, your calves will ache, but your heart will be full.

24 hours in Gjirokaster is enough to fall in love, climb a mountain, eat three families’ worth of food, and forget your WiFi password. So pack light, bring an appetite, and let this stone city charm the raki out of you.
