You probably wouldn’t have believed them.
Yet that’s exactly what happened.
Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, the musical mastermind behind Oppenheimer, Black Panther, and Tenet, traveled to southern Albania in search of a sound that felt older than history itself. What he found was one of humanity’s oldest living musical traditions: Albanian iso-polyphony, particularly the unique singing style of Labëria.
A Journey to Southern Albania
While creating the score for The Odyssey, Göransson wanted music that sounded as if it belonged to the Bronze Age—not modern Hollywood.
Instead of relying only on orchestras or digital effects, he spent about a week in southern Albania recording authentic Labëria iso-polyphonic singing, describing it as a sound he had never before heard used in a film of this scale.
The Voices of the Shepherds
His research didn’t stop with singing.
According to reports, Göransson also recorded the sounds of Albanian shepherds and the traditional fyell dyjar (double flute), searching for raw, natural textures that could transport audiences back thousands of years.
Imagine hearing echoes from the mountains of Labëria while watching Odysseus sail across the Mediterranean.
That’s the kind of authenticity Nolan’s team was after.
What Is Iso-Polyphony?
Albanian iso-polyphony is one of the country’s greatest cultural treasures.
Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, it is a style of multipart singing where several voices intertwine over a sustained drone (“iso”), creating a powerful, haunting harmony unlike almost anything else in the world.
Among all regional styles, Labëria is especially famous for its complex three- and four-part vocal arrangements.

Why It Fits The Odyssey
Homer’s Odyssey is over 2,500 years old.
