Rozafa Castle is more than a site, it’s a symbol of strength, sacrifice, and identity for generations of Albanians.
A Fortress With Ancient Roots
The hill where Rozafa Castle stands has been inhabited since the Early Bronze Age. Archaeological evidence shows fortification walls dating back to the 4th–3rd century BCE, during the Illyrian period when this was the stronghold of the Labeatae tribe. It was the capital of the Illyrian king Gentius, who famously resisted Roman conquest until his defeat in 168 BCE.
Though the castle has seen various rulers, from Illyrians to Romans, Venetians, and Ottomans — much of what stands today dates from the Venetian era.
From Cathedral to Mosque
Inside the castle, you’ll find the ruins of a 13th-century Catholic church, believed to have been St. Stephen’s Cathedral. After the Ottoman siege in the 15th century, the church was transformed into the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Mosque, reflecting the cultural shifts in Shkodër’s history.
The Legend of Rozafa
What makes this castle unforgettable is its legendary story, one that Albanians have passed down for generations.
According to the legend, three brothers were trying to build the fortress, but each night the walls they built collapsed. A wise man told them the only way to make the foundation hold was through human sacrifice, to immure the wife who brought food the next day.
The youngest brother kept his promise of silence. His wife, Rozafa, unknowingly brought lunch the next day. Upon learning her fate, she accepted it but made one final request:
“Leave my right eye, hand, foot, and breast uncovered so I can care for my infant son, to see him, feed him, hold him, and rock him to sleep.”

The story ends with Rozafa being walled into the foundation. Her sacrifice became a symbol of love, duty, and resilience. Even today, locals believe her milk still flows through the walls of the castle.
