Three brothers were trying to build a castle above Shkodra, but every night the walls mysteriously collapsed. An old man told them the castle would only stand if one of their wives was sacrificed within its walls.

The brothers agreed not to warn their wives, but only the youngest kept his promise. His wife, Rozafa, accepted her fate but asked for one eye, one hand, one breast, and one foot to remain outside the wall so she could continue caring for her baby.

The castle stood. The story became one of Albania’s most famous symbols of sacrifice and motherhood.

2. The Legend of Argjiro

The ultimate “I’d rather jump” story.

According to legend, when enemies invaded Gjirokastra, Princess Argjiro refused to be captured. Rather than surrender, she threw herself from the castle walls while holding her child.

Some versions say the child survived, while others focus on her bravery and refusal to lose her freedom.

Today, many people connect the story to the stone city itself, where every alley seems to whisper old secrets.

3. Muji and Halili

Albania’s original superhero brothers.

Muji gains supernatural strength after being blessed by mountain fairies, while his brother Halili becomes his loyal companion. Together they battle enemies, defend their lands, and accomplish impossible feats.

4. Besa e Kostandinit

The promise that survived death.

Kostandini promises his mother that no matter where his sister goes after marriage, he will always bring her home when needed.

Then he dies.

The problem? An Albanian promise (besa) is not something you break. According to the legend, Kostandini rises from the grave to fulfill his word and bring his sister back.

Moral of the story: never underestimate the power of an Albanian promise.

5. Gjergj Elez Alia

The warrior who got up one last time.

Gjergj Elez Alia had spent years wounded and bedridden after countless battles. Then one day a terrifying enemy arrived, threatening his people.

Despite his injuries, Gjergj rose from his bed and fought one final battle to protect his land.

It’s basically the Albanian version of “I didn’t hear no bell.”

Why is the water so unbelievably blue?

One popular legend says a giant serpent or dragon once terrorized the area. After it was defeated, its eye remained where it fell, creating the deep blue spring known today as the Blue Eye.
